Nicola Mondanelli

Nicola Mondanelli graduated in Medicine at the University of Florence in 2002. He completed his residency in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the same university in 2007 (cum laude), under Prof. Paolo Aglietti. In 2011 he received his PhD in “Pathology and Clinics of the Musculoskeletal System and Calcified Tissues”. During his training he spent periods at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York (Hip and Knee Service) and at the Schulthess Klinik in Zurich (hip surgery), and he later visited the Orthopaedic Oncology Service of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. From 2009 to 2018 he was Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Oncologic and Reconstructive Orthopaedics Unit of the Careggi University Hospital in Florence with Prof. Rodolfo Capanna. There he focused on limb salvage surgery for bone and soft tissue sarcomas and on complex reconstructions with megaprostheses, silver-coated implants and massive allografts. In 2018 he moved to Siena, and he is currently Associate Professor at the University of Siena and Director of the Residency Program in Orthopaedics and Traumatology. His early research addressed knee surgery, including a randomized clinical trial comparing single- and double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

His current research interests are bone fragility and periprosthetic fractures: he described periprosthetic atypical femoral fractures and proposed a combined surgical and medical treatment algorithm. He also works on the molecular mechanisms of osteoarthritis (microRNAs and lncRNAs in human chondrocytes and synovial fibroblasts), on 3D planning, intraoperative navigation and custom-made implants in shoulder arthroplasty, and on the management of periprosthetic joint infections. He is principal investigator of observational studies on orthopaedic infections and shoulder arthroplasty. Since 2024 he has been a member of the Permanent Technical Board on orthopaedic prosthetic implants of the Tuscan Regional Health Service.
